Judge issues Directive to UCLA Students & University

Yesterday a Federal judge told UCLA and Jewish students who sued the university that the two sides have one week to agree upon an enforceable plan to ensure equal access to campus for all students during Israel-Hamas protests or potential future protests on campus.

The suit was initiated after 3 Jewish UCLA students sued the university claiming that their civil rights were violated when Pro-Palestine students blocked them and other Jews from accessing portions of campus. US District Judge Mark Scarsi said any agreement would have to “provide Jewish students on campus some reassurance their rights won’t play second fiddle.”

After the directive, Judge Scarsi said he’s likely to issue an injunction that grants all students “fair and equal access” but stopped short of singling out a particular group of students. His injunction would mark the first federal court intervention over UCLA’s pro-Palestinian protests.

Currently UC leaders are working to draft a systemwide plan to bring a standardized protocol for all its campuses when addressing free speech violations. State lawmakers are withholding $25-million in state funding until the UC 'President provides a report on it’s proposed protocol.
